Meta will switch on product browsing in your running Facebook and Instagram ads on Oct 28. Here is how to check, opt out or keep it, ad by ad.

If you run Facebook or Instagram ads, Meta is about to change what happens when someone taps them. Starting October 28, 2026, Meta says it will add product browsing to your existing ads. You do not have to switch anything on. It happens by default unless you act first.

The date matters because it lands about a month before Black Friday (November 27, 2026), when most stores have their best-performing ads running. A default change on proven creative is the kind of thing you want to decide on deliberately, not discover in your reports.

What product browsing actually does

With product browsing on, a tap on your ad may open an experience inside Facebook or Instagram showing product information and personalised suggestions, before the person reaches your website. Meta's wording is that people "may" see this, so not every tap will trigger it. Meta has not explained how the page is built or where the suggested items come from.

In plain terms: some of your clicks may no longer go straight to your landing page or product page. They may spend time in a Meta-owned browsing layer first, and that layer can show items you did not pick for that ad.

What Meta claims, and what is missing

Meta cites a 3% average increase in conversions, from an experiment run August 6 to August 21, 2026, across about 117,700 advertisers in at least three verticals, including e-commerce, CPG and retail. Meta calls the result significant at over 99% confidence.

That is a decent sample, but PPC Land notes the notice does not say which conversion events were counted, how the comparison group was built, or whether cost per conversion, revenue or ROAS moved. A 3% average also hides a wide spread. Some accounts will gain, some will lose.

There is a documentation gap too. As of October 15, there was no Meta Help Center article, changelog entry or newsroom post describing the change. The details come from the advertiser notice as reproduced by PPC Land and Relevant Audience. Meta also has not said whether ads created after October 28 will default to on.

How to check and control it, step by step

  1. Find the notice. Check the email and notifications on your Meta business account, and ask whoever manages your ads whether they received it. Notices like this often go to a single admin.
  2. Decide per account. The notice has an "Opt out" button that works before October 28. It is unclear whether one click covers one account or several, and one agency reported that clicking it opened a page confirming the account rather than opting out instantly. Check the confirmation screen for each ad account you run.
  3. Sort your ads into two groups. Ads where a controlled landing page is essential (lead gen offers, licensed or regulated products, ads with specific promo pages) and ads where a product-led path suits you (broad catalog or retail ads).
  4. Use the per-ad toggle. In Ads Manager, under Advantage+ Creative and Destination settings, you can turn product browsing on or off ad by ad. Meta says this works after October 28 as well, so nothing is locked in.
  5. Note a baseline now. Record the last 14 days of click-through rate, landing page views, cost per purchase and ROAS for your top ads, so you can compare once the change goes live.

How to test it without wrecking your holiday sales

You do not need to guess whether the 3% lift applies to you. Opt out your biggest, most predictable campaigns for now, and let the default apply to a smaller set of ads. Or duplicate one ad, leave browsing on for one copy and off for the other, and give both the same budget and audience.

Watch landing page views against link clicks. If clicks hold steady but landing page views drop, people are spending their time in Meta's browsing layer. That is only a problem if purchases do not follow. Judge the test on purchases and revenue, not clicks.

The reporting problem to plan for

Media buyer David Herrmann told PPC Land that a client's results on one ad were actually driven by a collection ad on Instagram Reels, and that Ads Manager did not separate the two. PPC Land could not verify that account, but it points at a real risk: when Meta adds an experience between the tap and your site, it gets harder to see what produced the sale.

Herrmann also warns that licensed-product copy may not match generated product ads unless product sets are configured. If your brand has strict wording rules, review your catalog and product sets before the switch.

Make sure your own tracking can back up Meta's numbers. A clean web analytics setup and sound channel attribution let you compare what Meta reports against what your store or CRM actually recorded.

Key takeaways

  • Product browsing switches on for existing Meta ads on October 28, 2026, unless you opt out.
  • Meta's 3% conversion lift is its own figure, with key details unpublished.
  • Opt out through the notice before the date, or toggle it per ad in Advantage+ Creative and Destination settings at any time.
  • Record a baseline this week and run a split test on a small set of ads before Black Friday.
  • Check that your tracking can tell Meta's browsing experience apart from your site traffic.
