Google Ads now lets you rank channels and cap spend on Search partners and Display. Here is what changes in February 2027 and what to set before then.

On 14 October, Google announced two new budget settings for Google Ads: channel prioritisation and budget allocation. Rollout began on 15 October and arrives account by account, so you may not see it yet.

The part that deserves your attention is the deadline. In February 2027, Google will retire the current spend allocation setup for Search campaigns that have the Display Network switched on. If you do nothing, your channel mix could shift without you choosing it.

What Google actually announced

Until now, most advertisers made a blunt choice about Search partners and the Display Network: leave them on and accept unpredictable spend, or switch them off. The new controls sit in between.

The two settings work like this:

  • Channel prioritisation: you mark a channel as High or Low priority. High priority channels are funded first, and Low priority channels only get what is left.
  • Budget allocation: for a Low priority channel, you set a maximum share of the daily budget it can use. A 5% allocation on a $1,000 average daily budget means a target of about $50 a day.
  • Defaults: every channel starts as High priority, so nothing changes until you change it.

Google's own explanation, quoted by MediaPost, is that many advertisers have opted into Search partners or Display on Search campaigns and worry about how spend swings on those channels. Tal Akabas, director of product management at Google Ads, framed the tools as a way to make performance spend more predictable.

Which campaigns and channels it covers

According to PPC Land's breakdown of the help pages:

  • Search: Google Search, Search partners and the Google Display Network can each get their own priority.
  • Shopping: Google Search and Search partners.
  • Performance Max: Google channels, Search partners and the Display Network.
  • Demand Gen: Google channels and the Display Network, though the sources disagree on how much is live at launch.

In Performance Max and Demand Gen, Search, YouTube, Maps, Gmail and Discover are grouped as one block called Google channels. You cannot rank them separately.

The February 2027 deadline

This is the change that can quietly affect your results. In February 2027, Search campaigns with Display Expansion will be migrated automatically to the new system. Spend by channel may move when that happens.

If you like your current mix, Google's guidance is simple: set the Display Network to Low priority with a 50% allocation. That keeps the current behaviour. PPC Land also reports that Display will stop serving on Search campaigns using Target Impression Share from the same month.

What the controls will not do

Read the fine print before you promise your finance team anything.

  • Prioritisation only matters when a campaign is limited by budget. For Target CPA or Target ROAS campaigns that are not budget-limited, it generally has no effect.
  • Limits are best effort. Google says spend may occasionally exceed the allocation, and a 0% setting is not a formal off switch.
  • Allocations reset daily. Unspent or overspent amounts do not carry over.
  • Tooling is thin at launch. Management is limited to the Google Ads interface and Search Ads 360. API and Editor support is listed as coming soon, and settings cannot be applied from manager accounts.

PPC Land also points out that the sources are not fully consistent on details such as Demand Gen support and which bid strategies are affected. Check the help page inside your own account before you plan around a specific rule.

Who should care most

Three kinds of advertiser stand to gain or lose here.

  1. Brands that switched off Search partners or Display years ago. You can now test them with a hard ceiling, say 5% to 10% of budget, instead of an all or nothing decision.
  2. Brands that left everything on. If you have never looked at your channel report, you may be paying for placements that convert far worse than Search. This is the moment to look.
  3. Ecommerce and lead gen accounts running Performance Max. Capping how much budget the weaker surfaces can absorb is a practical way to protect margin.

What to do before February

  1. Audit your current split. Pull spend, conversions and cost per conversion by network for the last 90 days on every Search campaign that has Display Expansion or Search partners on.
  2. Decide per campaign, not per account. A brand campaign and a prospecting campaign deserve different settings.
  3. Protect what works. If Display Expansion is performing, set Display to Low priority at 50% now so the February migration does not change it.
  4. Test small. If you excluded a channel before, give it 5% and a clear test window, with conversion tracking you trust.
  5. Write it down. Record the settings and the date, so a later dip in results can be traced back to a cause.

Key takeaways

  • Channel prioritisation and budget allocation started rolling out on 15 October 2026 and are opt in.
  • Current Display spend allocation on Search campaigns is retired in February 2027, so decide now rather than be migrated.
  • The controls help most when budgets are the limiting factor, and limits are best effort.
  • Review channel level results before you change anything. Good data beats a hunch.
