TikTok announced Buy Direct, a Shopping Assistant and Agentic Leads. No dates yet, but here are six steps to get your products and lead flow ready now.
On 5 October 2026, at Advertising Week New York, TikTok announced a batch of AI tools for advertisers. Three of them change what happens after someone sees your video: Buy Direct, a Shopping Assistant and Agentic Leads.
The catch is that TikTok gave no launch dates, markets or eligibility details for any of them. So this is not a post about switching something on today. It is about the groundwork you can do now, so you are not scrambling when the invitation arrives.
What TikTok actually announced
The three tools that touch your sales and leads:
- Buy Direct: an in-app checkout that lets people buy from a brand without leaving the For You feed, with one-click purchasing.
- Shopping Assistant: a conversational AI agent that answers questions about products, shipping, sizing and availability, and can handle the purchase in the same conversation.
- Agentic Leads: an AI agent that qualifies and converts prospects through guided conversations. It is planned as a Lead Agent in TikTok Direct Messages and as a Lead Agent in lead forms on advertiser-owned websites.
TikTok named Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe among its commerce partners. Relevant Audience points out that the announcement says nothing about fees, data sharing, CRM handoff or consent for Agentic Leads, and it is unclear how Buy Direct relates to TikTok Shop checkout. Treat anything beyond the list above as unknown.
Why it is worth preparing before the dates arrive
An AI agent can only answer with what it can read. If your sizes are inconsistent, your stock levels lag, or your lead form asks for twelve fields, an assistant will expose that faster than a human visitor would. The brands that tidy this up first will be the easiest to switch on.
Two other announcements are worth a glance. TikTok's GMV Max will now factor in affiliate commissions, coupons and referral fees so sellers can optimise for what TikTok calls a "true return on investment", again with no date given. And the TikTok Ad Network, which reaches just under 400,000 apps, has been announced for US advertisers.
Step 1: Clean your product data
Open your catalogue and check the fields a shopper would ask about in a chat: size and fit, materials, shipping times and costs, returns, and whether an item is in stock. Fill the gaps and make the wording consistent. If one product says "XL" and another says "Extra Large", pick one.
Relevant Audience notes that the Shopping Assistant's answers depend on product data quality. Fix it once at the source (your Shopify or other store admin) rather than in several places. Our Shopify SEO and marketing team does this kind of catalogue clean-up routinely.
Step 2: Write the answers your assistant will need
Pull the last 50 questions your customers sent you by DM, email or live chat. Group them. You will usually find that ten or so questions account for most of them: delivery to certain regions, whether something fits, how returns work, whether a discount stacks.
Turn each one into a short, factual answer:
- State the answer in one or two sentences.
- Add the condition, such as a date cut-off or order minimum.
- Note who owns the answer, so it gets updated when policy changes.
Keep the same answers on your website's FAQ and product pages. That gives you one source of truth, and it helps ordinary search too.
Step 3: Check your commerce stack
Buy Direct and Shopping Assistant were built with partners including Shopify, Shoplazza, Salesforce and Stripe. If you already run on one of those, you are in a reasonable position. If your checkout is custom, ask your developer how orders, payments and stock would sync with an outside checkout.
Decide now who handles refunds and failed payments when a sale happens inside another app. Those details are not in the announcement, so ask when you get access. Our web development and CRM integration teams can map this with you.
Step 4: Define a qualified lead before an AI does it for you
Agentic Leads is meant to qualify prospects through conversation. That only works if you can say what qualified means. Write it down in plain terms: budget range, timeline, location, company size, the problem they are trying to solve.
Then decide what happens next. Who follows up, how fast, and in which system? A lead that sits in a DM inbox for three days is a lead lost, however clever the first conversation was. This is core go-to-market work, and our go-to-market strategy and lead nurture services are built around it.
Step 5: Fix your measurement
If a purchase happens inside TikTok, your website analytics may never see it. Make sure you can tie orders back to campaigns using whatever reporting TikTok offers, and compare it with your own store data weekly.
Work out your true margin per product too, including coupons, affiliate commissions and referral fees. GMV counts revenue, so a heavily discounted sale can look the same as a full-price one while earning you less. Knowing your numbers lets you judge GMV Max's cost-aware optimisation when it arrives. A proper analytics setup makes this far easier.
Step 6: Test the basics on the live platform
While you wait, use what is available today. Watch which of your videos prompt product questions in the comments, and note the questions. Review your TikTok ad creative and landing pages as a stranger would. If you run paid campaigns, our TikTok advertising team can help you review what is working before the new tools reach your account.
Key takeaways
- Buy Direct, Shopping Assistant and Agentic Leads were announced on 5 October 2026 with no dates, markets or pricing.
- Clean product data and clear answers are what an AI assistant will draw on.
- Define a qualified lead and a follow-up owner before Agentic Leads appears.
- Know your real margin after coupons and commissions.
- Do not change your whole TikTok strategy on an announcement. Prepare, then test when access opens.
