A study of 100,000 keywords found social links in 68% of Google AI Overviews. See which platforms get cited and what your brand should publish.

Your social accounts might be doing a job you never gave them. A new study from SE Ranking, reported by Social Media Today on 7 October, looked at 100,000 keywords and found that social platforms show up in a large share of AI answers, especially in Google.

If you have been treating social as a side channel that only matters for followers and likes, this changes the maths. Here is what the study found, what it does not tell you, and what to do with it.

What the SE Ranking study found

According to the Social Media Today write-up, links to social platforms appeared in each AI product at very different rates:

  • Google AI Overviews: 67.66% of responses included social platform links.
  • Google AI Mode: 32.39%.
  • ChatGPT: 8.4%.

YouTube was the most commonly cited source in AI Overviews. In AI Mode, Facebook, YouTube and Reddit were cited most often. In ChatGPT, Reddit and LinkedIn led among social platforms, though each appeared in fewer than 1% of answers to common queries.

The AI Mode numbers also split by query type. Social sources appeared in 39.34% of branded query responses and 48.58% of non-branded ones, based on the top 100,000 queries analysed.

Why this matters for your brand

The headline is simple: Google's AI answers lean heavily on social and video content. If someone asks Google a question in your market and an AI Overview appears, there is a good chance a YouTube video or a social post sits behind part of it.

That has two consequences. First, a brand with no useful video or social presence has fewer ways to be pulled into those answers. Second, the non-branded number is the one to watch. People asking general questions are people who have not picked a supplier yet, and nearly half of the AI Mode responses to those questions included social sources.

How to read the three platform numbers

The gap between 67.66% and 8.4% is large, and it is easy to misread. Google's AI Overviews appear on a big share of searches and draw on the same index that already ranks YouTube videos and forum threads. ChatGPT, by contrast, cites social platforms in a small fraction of answers, so a plan built on one platform's habits will miss the others.

In practice, that means a small business with limited time should start with Google. It is where most of your buyers still begin, and it is where the study finds the heaviest use of social and video sources.

Reddit is not a safe bet on its own

It is tempting to read this and rush into Reddit. The same article points out the risk. It cites a Search Engine Land report that Reddit's share of ChatGPT search citations fell 86.4% in four days back in August. AI tools can change what they cite quickly and without notice.

So treat any single platform as a rented room. Build a presence across the places where your buyers and the AI tools both look, and keep your own website as the home base.

What the study does not tell you

Be careful with the numbers. The study counts how often social links appear in AI responses. It does not show that posting more causes more citations, and the article itself only says an active social presence "may help". We also could not find the original SE Ranking report, so the figures here come from the Social Media Today coverage.

Use it as a direction, not a guarantee. The pattern is plausible and worth acting on at low cost. Just don't promise your boss a ranking jump.

A quick example

Say you sell accounting software to small firms. A buyer asks Google how to choose between two tools. An AI Overview appears and links a YouTube comparison from a reviewer, plus a forum thread. Your own site may rank well, yet you are absent from the part of the page that people read first. A clear, honest comparison video on your channel, built around that exact question, gives the AI a source from you to draw on.

What to do next

You do not need a new strategy. You need to point the work you already do at the places AI answers draw from.

  1. Audit where you appear. Search your ten most important customer questions in Google, note whether an AI Overview appears, and write down which YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn or Facebook sources it cites. Check whether any of them are yours or a competitor's. Our AI brand visibility audit does this at scale.
  2. Answer real questions on video. YouTube leads AI Overview citations in the study, so short, clear videos that answer buyer questions (pricing, comparisons, how it works) have the best odds. Title them the way customers phrase the question.
  3. Make your LinkedIn and Facebook pages substantive. Post explanations, case notes and answers, not only announcements. Our social media management team plans this around buyer questions rather than a posting calendar.
  4. Join conversations honestly. If your customers discuss you on Reddit, take part openly and helpfully. Don't astroturf. Platforms and communities spot it quickly.
  5. Track it monthly. Repeat the audit each month and note which platforms the AI tools cite, since those patterns shift. Pair it with GEO optimisation so your own site stays the primary source.

Key takeaways

  • Social platforms appear in about two thirds of Google AI Overview responses in this study, a third of AI Mode responses and under a tenth of ChatGPT answers.
  • YouTube is the standout for AI Overviews. Reddit and LinkedIn lead in ChatGPT.
  • Citation habits change fast, so spread your effort and keep your website central.
  • The study shows correlation in citations, not proof that posting more earns more visibility.
